Pretty shocking self-accounted tale. It's one of the reasons why in truth I'm glad I grew up American and why so many Japanese rebel and try to find individualism in like rock and stuff or become hikikomori. Japan--don't fix it if it isn't broken.

This reminds me of Locohama's posts on his extended time in that country. I can sympathize with your plight when the teacher blew up at you. Way to keep your cool.

I have deep love and fascination with Japanese culture, and anime in particular, but I've realized through these stories how deeply Western, and even more deeply American I am. Taking into account my mixed heritage, and a homogeneous situation like that would drive me crazy.

It's not a problem, I'm thankful someone braved the wave of text and I could share it with someone. I'll be making updates everyday this weekend since I have some free time for once, so be sure to look out for them!

Err, I was actually 15 at the time. Doubt that makes too much of a difference though, lol.

This post reminds me of when I went to China.

I'm of Chinese, Vietnamese and Laotian ethnicity born and raised in Canada. My parents never really taught me anything about my culture, so when I went to China, it was really tough to understand the culture for me. Due to this, I made many mistakes and blunders which were really bad in Asian culture. Since I really believe in individuality and expressing yourself, I felt uncomfortable in many situations and would get lost in trying to figure out what I should do for situations. Although I'm not very educated in this area of talk, I think I would rather stick with an American way of thinking for myself at least. Maybe if I was older I could have handled things better, but I still had some fond memories of the trip at least (16 at the time of the trip).

When you talked about your teacher, it reminded me of how I had a similar teacher. After enduring her fits of yelling just out at the class and such for a few days, I simply just took my stuff and left her class without a word.

Excellent post man. I love learning whatever I can about societies and cultures.
